LA GUERRA DEL FÚTBOL
LEONARDO GONZALEZ

Pointing to a moment of historical conflict between their respective nations, artist Leonardo Gonzalez (Honduras) creates a timely and thoughtful provocation within the setting of Lupe Maravilla’s (El Salvador) ongoing Disease Thrower installation. Using Ryszard Kapuscinski’s text La Guerra del Fútbol (1990) as a literal and figurative framework, Gonzalez undertakes a critical de- and re-construction of the narratives surrounding the events of the “Soccer War”, a brief military episode which, despite its brevity and playful name, provides powerful parallels to ongoing, global challenges of migration, land rights, and the complex legacies of colonization. Gonzalez will read and reinterpret sections of the text, while pages of the book are removed and folded into a series of ‘soccer ball’ shapes.

Leonardo González nos habla de un momento de conflicto histórico entre su país y su país vecino El Salvador. González (Honduras) crea una provocación oportuna y reflexiva en conversación con la instalación "Disease Thrower" de Guadalupe Maravilla (El Salvador). Utiliza el libro La Guerra del Fútbol escrito por Ryszard Kapuscinski como un marco literal y figurativo, González emprende una de re-construcción crítica de las narrativas que rodean los eventos de la "Guerra del Fútbol", un breve episodio militar que, a pesar de su brevedad y su nombre liviano, proporciona paralelos poderosos con los desafíos actuales y globales de la migración, los derechos sobre la tierra y los complejos legados de la colonización. González leerá y reinterpretará secciones del texto mientras quita las páginas del libro un especialista en Origami pliega las hojas hasta lograr formar un "balón de fútbol".
