Sign up for 5 or more sessions, for a 10% discount

$40/class registration includes:

  • Selected reading, sent via PDF two weeks before our meeting (in some cases, you may be encouraged to purchase the author’s book, but generally readings will be texts that can be circulated via PDF)

  • Laura’s Notes for Reading – a curated guide to the text, outlining major ideas + key terms

  • A moderated conversation about the reading, held online via Zoom

Fall 2020 Reading Club Meetings:

October 8: Walter Benjamin
October 22: Hannah Arendt
October 29: Clement Greenberg
November 12: Michel Foucault
November 19: Fred Moten
December 3: Gloria Anzaldúa
December 17: Claudia Rankine

Readings will include major thinkers in art history, criticism, theory, and practice. These readings should give you a vocabulary for discussing significant ideas in the history of art, since the 1910s, moving from early 20th century international avant-gardes to contemporary artists and philosophers writing about art, to specific schools of criticism (i.e. Greenberg, the October School, etc.). By the end of each session, you should be able to speak confidently about a specific aspect of each writer’s argument, and have tools to lead you into deeper reading, should you decide to dig in. You will also have case studies for how these tools might be used to talk about the works of specific artists, and where they fit historically within a larger art history of the 20th and 21st centuries. This is not organized as a chronological course – instead, it is a set of investigations into key thinkers that have defined and challenged the parameters of our field. Each session is $40 and is limited to 15 participants; registration closes 5 days in advance of the class. Write to ella@lauraagosto.com with any questions.
