The Tumbleweed Reading Club is a group of visual artists reading art history, criticism, and theory together to build an expanded vocabulary for our diverse studio practices. Readings will include works by writers who have influenced art history, criticism, theory, and studio practice for contemporary artists. They are not necessarily written from within the field of arts study, but may include writers working in Affect Theory, African American Studies, LGBTQ Studies, Literature, Poetry, Political Theory, Philosophy, Feminist Theory, and other diverse fields (including from spaces outside of academic inquiry). By the end of each session, I hope you will be able to speak confidently about a specific aspect of each writer’s argument, and have tools to lead you into deeper reading, should you decide to dig in. You will also have case studies for how these tools might be used to talk about the works of specific artists, and where they fit historically within a larger art history of the 20th and 21st centuries. This is not organized as a chronological course – instead, it is a set of investigations into the thinkers that have defined and challenged the parameters of our fields, and we are reading and learning from them, together. Each session is $40 and is limited to 15 participants; registration closes 3 days in advance of the class. Write to ella@lauraagosto.com with any questions.
